The total area of the city is 78.20 km². Over the same year, the city had a birth rate of 1.6 people per day and a mortality rate of 1.9 people per day. Ryugasaki is sometimes considered part of the Greater Tokyo Area. Many residents commute to central Tokyo. The city is the hometown of the JFL semi-pro team, Ryutsu Keizai University. The current mayor is Kazuo Nakayama, who assumed the position on January 18, 2010. Nakayama is the seventeenth and eighteenth mayor of Ryūgasaki having been re-elected to hold the position again from January 18, 2014. In 1974, the city adopted the Swan, the Pinus, and Platycodon grandiflorus as its city symbols for bird, tree and flower respectively. Ryugasaki is the home of Ryutsu Keizai University.
